A pioneer Kitesurf challenge on brazilian coast
The year was 2021. The team behind Sertões BRB, the biggest rally raid event in Americas, decided to expand to new horizons and become an adventure sports platform. It started with a new challenge on the water: Sertões Kitesurf, a long distance kitesurf rally, from 10/8 to 10/14.
Sertões Kitesurf inauguraç edition had a 500 kilometer route. An endurance test in five days, that took kitesurfers from São Miguel do Gostoso / Touros (in Rio Grande do Norte state) to Preá Beach, in Cruz (Ceará state). Among the starters, world champions and athletes from Brazil, Portugal and Argentina.
Competitors were split in three classes: Elite, Adventure and Master (male and female) and draw inspiration from the off-road rallies. The fastest ones after the fifth day were declared winners. Kitesurfers were lodged in camping tents.
In 2022, Sertões Kitesurf gained a title sponsor and became XP Sertões Kitesurf, from 11/1 to 11/6. A 440 km route once again tested competitors, on the way from Cumbuco (near Fortaleza, in Ceará) to Barra Grande (Piaui state). Some upwind parts were included to spice the challenge. Another change was the possibility of lodging in hotels and kite centers, helping the local businesses along the way. Kitesurfers were also allowed to have their own support teams. Two new classes were included: Gran Master and Pro Junior.
The event’s misson of showing fascinating landscapes was once more accomplished and participants ended it with spectacular memories and the desire to come back.
The 2023 edition of XP Sertões Kitesurf concentrated it route on Ceará state, from Cumbuco to Camocim. Confirming its growth, kitesurfers from seven countries were lined on the start. Among them, dominican Deury Corniel, Junior World Champion; british Hannah Whiteley, Speed world champion and french Theo Demanez.
Wing Pro (Foil) class joined the event. Along the race’s five days, kitesurfers from Pro and Elite classes sailed 460 km. Pro Jr, Adventure, Master and Grand Master classes faced a 330km route. Both crossed wonderful places to practice kitesurf like Ilha do Guajiru. And once again upwind parts defied competitors.
The 2024 edition welcomes Sol beer as its main sponsor and naming rights holder. From october 23rd to 26th, kitesurfers will sail from the Jaguaribe Lodge, in Fortim to Preá with intermediate stops in Aquiraz (on Beach Park complex); Trairi and Itarema. Once more surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
The 2025 edition of the Sol Sertões Kitesurf event repeated the start and finish cities from the previous year, but brought a series of new features. Among them, its inclusion in the official calendar of the Brazilian Sailing Confederation (CBVela) and the Brazilian Kitesurfing Association (ABK), valid for the national Rally Cross and TT Race championships. The event registered a new record of participants: 186.
In addition, for the first time, Fortaleza was part of the route, as the finish line for the first stage and the start of the second. Furthermore, on the way to Guajiru Beach in Trairi, the kitesurfers crossed the coastline of the Ceará capital and some of its iconic landmarks. Those registered in the Pro, Elite, and Open categories had to make a crossing on foot to go around the Port of Pecém.
The Pro Junior category gained a women’s division and a Sub-11 division, confirming that the sport’s talents are increasingly emerging at younger ages. Once again, the best were rewarded with a party.
